Maschio Angioino (Castel Nuovo)

Maschio Angioino — officially Castel Nuovo — is the castle our B&B is named after. It stands in Piazza Municipio, 400 metres from Via Alcide De Gasperi 45: a flat, 5-minute walk from our front door.

Built by Charles I of Anjou from 1279 and remodelled by the Aragonese in the fifteenth century, it is one of the symbols of Naples: five towers, a moat and the white marble Triumphal Arch of Alfonso of Aragon, set between two towers of dark piperno stone. Inside are the Civic Museum, the Palatine Chapel with fourteenth-century frescoes and the Barons' Hall.

Our tips

  • Climb to the terrace for the view over the harbour and Vesuvius: it is the best spot to understand how tightly the castle and the pier are linked.
  • In front of the castle, the Municipio metro station (Line 1) is a small contemporary art gallery in its own right — worth going down even without catching a train.
  • At night the illuminated castle is best enjoyed from the Piazza Municipio side, on your way back to the B&B.
